Superstar Rajinikanth’s action entertainer Jailer 2 has crossed the ₹500-crore mark at the global box office in its first week. Directed by Nelson, the film was released in theatres on October 15.
According to the film’s production banner, Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 has raked in ₹549+ crores as of Thursday, October 22. In a post on their official X handle, Sun Pictures added that this is the highest grossing first week in the history of Tamil cinema.

The film’s phenomenal box office performance has been garnering many responses from the industry as well. Pushpa star Allu Arjun, in a tweet posted on X said, “Only Rajini can hit 500 CR+ without tearing his shirt (sic)”
The numbers revealed by Sun Pictures are, in fact, quite prudent when compared with those of box office tracking websites. For instance, Sacnilk’s estimates for Jailer 2 stand at ₹576 crores (of which India gross is ₹371 crores and overseas total is ₹205 crores).
Jailer 2, a sequel to the 2023 film, stars Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon, and others. Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi appear in special cameos. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R Nirmal.

The film has garnered rave reviews for its comedy and Rajinikanth’s magnetic screen presence. The Hindu’s review of the film read, “Jailer 2 doesn’t seem like a cash grab banking on its predecessor’s glory; it’s a proper sequel written with intent. If not for plot points, many little pleasures — like a character taking a tissue at a specific moment or one in which a weapon hidden under a vehicle’s seat is used — find great callbacks in the sequel.”
